of course I have yet to update it
I use all the mod's that came with 1.5 update just fine as well
I dl'd a bots for it, I think strumbot for Day of Defeat
and POD bot http://podbot.nuclearbox.com/ for just plain CS
(I can't believe I got bf1942 to work, that amazes even me)
Ok, My post in relation to the one about steam somewhere up there is a little late, but I have only just moved to linux and should have sound within the next 30 mins when the alsa stuff finishes downloading and allk that stuff...
Anyway... onto what I meant to say... Steam sucks ass, especially for those with slower connections who only play half life in single player or over a lan as if it is downloaded on one machine it needs to be put on every machine which then needs to be updated and all that stuff and it sucks ass.
I think that this has lost its meaning so I will simply say that Hopefully HL on linux will be better than on Windows.
Thanks for bearing with me on ths one,
Graeme Nimmo
It is so big because the file you are downloading also contains the latest version of counterstrike.
If you look hard enough you can find a 730Mb ish file. That contains all the latest files for the main mods, ie, Opposing forces, team fortress, ricochett, etc.
Waste of time in my opinion.
and I am unhappy as my MANY attempts for sound have failed...
This is not for games, so I will take that problem elsewhere.
half-life on linux can be good, in fact my brother's a really good DoD player and _he only has linux_
however, it's just one thing after another. It is possible to get it going because it's a modified version of Quake2, fairly basic.
Steam is worrying but it seems to work at the moment.
Easiest way to get things working at the moment is by using Windows to unpack/install, reboot and run with Wine... but it usually still takes work.
I decided to try keeping a minimal win2k install just for all the Half-life games I like to play online. Hopefully I can trim down it all a bit more so it's nearly an XBox, who knows.
Graphics performance on linux is about 5-10fps slower for me (geforce2mx).
The big drawback with Windows though is:
- you can't alt+ctrl+f2 to the console for irc etc
- you can't have another xserver running
- dodgy to play mp3s
- basically it's a one trick horse, run your half-life based game and hope it doesn't crash
- and that's why I still play it under linux from time to time
