Question Half-Life 2: 3-7 FPS. Driver(NVIDIA) 1.0-6629(patched) - Nothing helps. Help please.

System: SuSE 9.0 Professional
CPU: 1.4 GHz
RAM: 256MB
Cedega version: cedega-4.2-1
Command for launch: cedega hl2.exe -steam -console -game hl2

When launching Half-Life 2 with Cedega all what I get is 3 to 7 FPS maximum,
although CPU speed and Memory amount is
seen by game(it writes in game console that I have CPU with 1.4 GHz and 249 MB of RAM).
Driver is NVIDIA 1.0-6629(patched with help of one link from nvnews.net forum)
Nothing helps to get at least 20 fps.

Help please.

What graphics card do you have? As 1.4Ghz and 256mb ram is very low specs for HL2 anyway...

Game is positioned on fat32 partition, and it can be seen from WinXP.
In WinXP it play VERY well(just a little bit laggy, when big things happen, but very playable - 25 fps minimum)

Forgot to say, that all settings are set to low and windowed mode with 640x480 resolution.
In Linux it is still 3-7 FPS but no more...

K, start the game off like this... cedega hl2.exe -steam -console -game hl2 && renice 10 "pgrep wineserver" ... that should set most things right.(NOTE: Change renice 10, to at most 19, to see if you get any performance increase. 19 is max, so don't push your luck any further) And believe me, your GeForce 4 is more then enough to play the game. After my GeForce FX 5500 blew up in smoke on me, I have been using my GeForce 2 GTS 32mb, running HL2 at 800x600 (instead of 1024x768) at 16bit color (yes its possible) and the quality of details at low. It reaches at max 55-60fps. So don't think you need a new graphics card just yet. (tho it would be nice to have one.) Im running my HL2 on an AMD Athlon XP 2500+, 512megs of 3200 ram (running at 2700) and ya. O and one more thing. Run HL2 on something OTHER THEN KDE and Gnome. Those sons of bitches eat ram as if there was no world hunger.

PS: And turn pixal shaders off. Look in your cedega config file in /home/you/.transgaming/config/ and look under [d3dgl] or something d3d, and where it says pixal shaders on or off. Turn them off. And also, somewhere in there you will see your video ram, and vertex shaders, in video ram, put your max taht your video card supports, and in the second option, put it to half your video ram.

RHLinuxGUY, thank you for solution.
It helped but not very much - maximum is 12 FPS(WMaker+renice with 19+changed config files as you adviced+Staring in Floor ).

Try running in fullscreen, window mode usually slows OpenGL apps down. It's usually not noticeable, but it might be in this case.

I don't think it will help because winex emulates fullscreen by switching resolution, capturing the mouse and creating a window without borders, so that fullscreen mode isn't really fullscreen.

Cool

Well, I tried this way:
1) init 3
2) from root> #X :1.0
3) from user> $DISPLAY=:1.0 hl2
P.S. hl2 is script which runs commands(cd /home/myhome/hl; /usr/bin/./cedega hl2.exe -steam -console -game hl2 && renice 19 "pgrep wineserver")
4) tried to play with FPS switched on(cl_showfps 2): IT TURNED GREEN WHILE STARING AT WALL(25-29 FPS) and yellow-red while running around.
Actually, not so fast as in WinXP(measured today): yellow-green(only sometimes - red)25-30 FPS.

Thank you for Your help !!!
