getting unreal tournament 2004 to run in linux

I'm using slackware 10 and I just installed ut 2004.when I start it inside gnome the title window comes up and disapears then the application quits. When I launch it from the xterm it says invalid color mode.

My default color mode is 24 bit, I don't know how to get it any higher than that.

I think it's probally my kernal but I'm not sure.....

Oh yeah I installed the newest nvidia drivers too

After installing the nvidia drivers did you reconfigure xorg.conf for the nvidia drivers?

I play UT2004 on slackware 10 without complications, the only time i've experienced the game crashing out at startup was when I didnt have the X config file setup right for my NVIDIA card.

Try taking a look at this file for a look at how your X11 Config file should be like:
/usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/XF86Config.sample
