Games run too quickly on Wine

I've been trying to play some old games under Wine (original command & conquer and Axis and Allies). Anyway, the games run too quickly on my Debian Etch box for me to play.

They also run too fast on my brother's XP box, but I found a nifty utility to just throttle down that CPU to 1% so it runs normally.

Is there a way to throttle the CPU on linux for a single application? I don't really want to throttle the entire box down because there are other services running in the background.

After a little googling, I'm going to try installing and using cpulimit from the Debian repositories. I'll let you know if it works...

Well, cpulimit did the trick after some mucking around to find the right PID. Wine spools off several processes and I ended up having to throttle down 4 different processes (found using top) to 5% of CPU. Now if only I could get the sound to work consistently...

I had a similar problem on Suse 10.0 - It went away when I set the cpu scaling to full - or whatever it was called... force it to run on full power and not scale down. For the sound you can try to use a different driver - run winecfg to set it. ALSA has worked fine for me, but now I mostly run it through Jack with wineasio. That has fixed sound issues in some games. I use it because I run audio stuff in wine - might be overkill just for a game - but here's a howto if you're interested:
