Games for Linux....

Hello,

I have seen several games that I play online being hosted on linux servers....

How are the games different to windows games and where can you download them from....

Do the games run any better in linux than in windows ?

I have never tried a proper game in linux before so it's all completely new to me.....

I would be good to try tho......so how would one go about getting a game, installing and running ?

cheers

Ran.

It depends - it's usually different from game to game.
I suggest you download and try Enemy Territory. It's based on Return to Castle Wolfenstein (which in turn is based on Quake III). It's a free 250MB download and it's multiplayer only.

Grab it here: http://www.3dgamers.com/games/wolfensteinet/
The file you'll want is et-linux-2.56-2.x86.run. Download it to a temporary directory, then type su and then the root password to become root. Type chmod +x et-linux-2.56-2.x86.run to make the file executable, then type ./et-linux-2.56-2.x86.run to launch the installer. Follow the instructions. Type exit to exit su mode and enjoy a nice fast-paced action game.

can you recommend some good emulators that work good (NES, SNES, GENESIS) and are EASY TO INSTALL (NO COMPILING! COMPILING IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME! I'VE TRIED A FEW EMULATORS AND I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW TO COMPILE)

Thanks

choppy...

I've downloaded ET as advised and did as you said...

To begin with it didn't do anything because of opengl so I had to put an extra bit on the command line to make it work (cant remember what exactly).....

When it started up, my mouse moved dead slowly and seem to jump from point to point around the screen.....I could't even get to the bit to change my name and it took ages to get the pointer to the quit button.....

Is this a graphics card prob, mouse or monitor ?

I know my monitor is probab;ly setup wrong because there was no option for a philips 107E in the monitor section so I told it, it was a 107B.....Does anyone know where the best place would be to get a driver for the monitor ?

Also my grahics card is using the nv driver and is a geforce 4 ti4200 64mg winfast a280 but I didn't see a leadtek or a winfast option for it so it's set as generic geforce 4 - is that ok ?

cheers

You need 3d accelleration to make the game work, so you would have to get the nvidia drivers and install. Some people find them a bit hard to install, but do a search on this forum and there is plenty of threads about getting them to work.

If you downloaded the Nvidia drivers you should not be using the 'nv' driver in your XF86Config file. The readme has a few things in there on what needs to be set up in your config file.

A good test to see if your card is working O.K. is to type 'glxgears' and see what your FPS is. I have a really crappy video card right now so I can't give you a good number to look for but maybe someone else does. Also 'glxinfo' can tell you a few things.

But your problem most likely resides in your video driver.

BTW...ET is an absolutely awesome game. I have not played in a few weeks since my video card died and I am going crazy!

Like Goo$e said, you need to be useing the "nvidia" driver, not the "nv" driver. Here's the readme file ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li...496/README.txt . Be sure to visit Appendix D for the X86Config options.
