Games & protection for a 5 year old?

What are the best games for a 5 year old in the category fun and also educational.

And what kind of internet protection do you use or suggest (against inappropriate sites for this age category)?

How about being present when she/he goes on the internet?

Kind regards

I would agree. Another option is to make sure that the pc is -not- connected to the internet. Create a default new user account if possible. I may sound paraniod but then this is what I do when kids visit me.

If you have default kde games I think that would suffise.

No internet is not an option (due to some allowed websites, including her own) but also because there is so much good content out there for her.

And the default games are not at all sufficient, either they are too difficult or they are not fun after she played with them several times (she has her computer for a few months now - it is located so we can easily see the screen, as we only sit with her about half the time).

Take a look at squid and dansguardian.
However, you are the best filter.

For the games

DansGuardian: good idea, I'll look into that.

But the google search is the reason why I ask the question: have you actually tried looking at the first 15 or so sites and downloaded any of the games? I did ... some did not install, most where not appropriate for a 5 year old (too difficult to operate or not engaging enough by a long shot). I guess I'm looking for a mom or dad that already spent significant time testing (native linux) games for 5 year olds in the field.

Take a look at "Childsplay" for educational games for children in that age bracket:

Most linux distros will have a package for it.
