Thumbs up Gamers for Linux petition

I came across this petition and encourage all gamers and Linux users to sign it. Maybe with enough support we can change the minds of game developers to include native Linux support for games. Even if you are not a gamer, keep in mind that support for commercial games in Linux is a big barrier for adoption by many users. Your support is also welcome.

signed. be nice to have a petition for hardware/software as well, make linux more known, because as we know, it's not just some little dinky toy to toy around with, it's a distro, and quite a professional and impressive one IMO.

I'm not a gamer, and have no interst in signing the petition, but if I can offer a suggestion, there is a much better way to vote on this issue.

Buy a commercial Linux game!

You probably can't find one in your local computer shop, but they're easy enough to find on the net.

Unreal Tournament games all come with native Linux binaries, except I think the very first one, and I have UT2k4 for both operating systems, and there is literally no performance difference.

Edit: Some games don't work on Linux because they were written for Windows necessarily, but because they were written poorly. While I have found that DirectX runs slightly slower than OpenGL, it is better at deciphering sloppy code, (because regardless what engine it uses it all gets reduced to binary in the end anyway), and therefore when you try playing games that are written poorly in OpenGL which is more strict and less tolerant of mistakes and bad syntax, your Linux PC has a brainfart, :P.

Please dont take this as thread jacking, but how viable would that be on a non-intel based platform, say ppc? Who makes those games i read about one recently ,but on further inquest all ports to other architectures had been stopped. It seems to be that ports are around and are mentioned frequently, but dont seem to be available, one i really want is x-plane, i tired further on OSX and the visuals dont stand up and i wouldnt mind flying on mars. Im sure i read about a ppc linux version ,but i cant find it anywhere. Can anyone help me with things like this or point me ppc ported linux games.

One last thing, am i right in assuming i have no chance with opened up games, i mean this with games that have an open source way to play them but need their original game disk for maps and graphics. Games like command and conquer through freeCNC.

As long as your CD drives are mapped correctly in wine or Cedega or whatever you use, they should work just fine.

I don't want to sound pesimistic, but online petitions rarely influence companies,... And I would say doubly so for game companies. Computer game publishers are always very interested in the bottom line... cost of development vs. amount of return. Unless they have a soft spot for Linux as computer programers, they are going to have little interest in porting a game,... Linux gamers are just not a large enough market to catch their concern.

The best bet is companies like LGP, who get rights to older games and port them under an NDA and for a license fee... That, and convincing those game publishers with a soft spot for Linux (such as ID) to publish games that are in the genre that you are looking for.

VOTED
Tkx for the url. Say what you want about petitions working or not, I know for sure that doing nothing will get the results someone else wants. Spend your $ on Linux and they will come.
