et is a bit slow..

Hi,

my system specs are as follows:

Slackware 10.1
kernel 2.6.11.7
Amd Sempro 2400 (around 1.6ghz)
256mb ram
120gb harddrive
nvidia geforce fx5200 128mb ram (nvidia driver 1.0-7174)

Ive been playing enemy territory, my system plays it fine until explosions go off n stuff then is slows down pretty bad. I aslo play it in winxp and it runs alot smoother.

Does anyone have any tips on how to improve performace for games?

Ive noticed that even at boot my memory usage is almost full: 244,332KB used, 11,884KB free. Will this be because I use kdm and kde as a default DE?

thanks

In ET, go to Options and check the following:

In "View" section:
Ejecting Brass=off
Low Quality Sky=yes
Particles=no
Blood Flash=no
Blood Spatter=no

In "System" section:
Resolution=800x600
Geometric Detail=low/medium
Texture detail=low/medium
Texture Filter=bilinear
Detail Textures=no
Sync every frame=no

There are a few other things you can set by editing the config file, but the stuff above should make a difference. The main thing is the explosions (Particles) which take a lot of resources.

Get another 256mb of ram. This game does not run happily at 256mb, 512mb is the bare minimum if you want performance.

Besides that, changing the options above will give u a temporary reprieve, but at the cost of visual effects.

The memory usage is way to high, you should check to see what is using all the memory. What you could do in the mean time is use xfce instad of kde untill you pick up another stick of ram.
