Dosbox and timidity without being daemon possible?
Can dosbox use timidity without it running in daemon mode?
I don't want to manually run timidity daemon (server mode) every time I use dosbox (or boot my computer). I tried setting midi_device to sdl (and sdl_mixer) in dosbox.conf but that doesn't work. I know timidity can be used without running as a daemon-server process; chocolate-doom and gzdoom use timidity that way with no problem.
You can't. While most applications that play MIDI now essentially have TiMidity++ or Fluidsynth embedded inside them, DosBox is an exception. The apparent reason is that DosBox wants to allow you to choose your MIDI output device, which may be TiMidity (running as a daemon, of course), but may also be an an MT-32 emulator.
