prboom lets you play doom wads in linux. It's pretty much a native Linux version of the Doom engine. Basically, just install prboom, then copy the .wad files you want to play to $HOME/.prboom, then run prboom.

Just download prboom and read the README or INSTALL file. Since you're running Ubuntu, you may be able to just run
Code:
you@yourcomputer: sudo apt-get install prboom
if it is in any of the repositories.

Try doing
Code:
you@yourcomputer: prboom
Or if that doesn't do it, try
Code:
you@yourcomputer: whereis prboom
And if it gives you something like /usr/local/games/prboom for the path, just do
Code:
you@yourcomputer: /usr/local/games/prboom

I'm not sure about the online playing, you would have to check out the prboom website and see if it's capable of online play. For uninstalling, check out
Code:
you@yourcomputer: man apt-get
