Doom 3 CD Key??

Hi all, dewildered as usual.

Purchased a copy of Doom 3, installed the Linux port .... doom3-linux-1.3.1.1304.x86.run and copied the required *.pk4 files to /usr/local/games/doom3/base from the cd.

On running the game I get requested for a 'CD Key'. The only key I have is on the back of the manual, a 16 letter/digit string. The dialouge allows for the inputting of a 16 + 2 digit string. Is the number on the back cover of the manual the one I need? Only it does not work and I have tried and retried.

I have seen posts that say that Doom3 1.3.1 (my version) does not require a cd key, ID software disabled this verification process?

I have tried entering the key with and without internet connection. I have also seen comments that you only need the CD key if playing networked games.

So do I have the right key?
Should there be another key in the jewel case (there isn't)?
Do I need a cd key for 1.3.1?
Can I pay single player game without key?

And incidentally I installed all this on a Windoz machine and it accepted the key on the back of the manual without problems and works fine. Oh and I have two files in my home dir. One called doomkey and one called xpkey. All they contain is

Code:
// D
// Do not give this file to ANYONE.
// id Software and Activision will NOT ask you to send this file to them.
No key string present at all in them.

Any assistance/advice really very much appreciated.

BashTin

Email iD's technical support. The key stored from the XP install will almost certainly be hashed somewhere, and a pain to get to.

Thanks will give it ago. Might be interested to know that I tried to reinstall it on the Windozs machine but now that installer is not accepting the key either!
