Question Do you have a working Wine Half Life?

My Wine/Half Life is absolutely wacky!
If someone on the forum has a working wine/half life install I would really love to see your wine config file. I believe at least some of my problems are there. I would like to eliminate the wine config as culprit before I start asking tons of questions.

Many Thanks!

is it through steam or just basic ol half-life?
and secondly, i have had half-life/cs working for ages (not now cause i formatted last week and never re-installed everything yet) and i know that i have never had to change a thing in my wine config ...
all i had to do (same goes for many others) is type:
mount /mnt/cdrom
wine /mnt/cdrom/SETUP.exe
and then fire up hl.exe (or cstrike.exe or any other mod you may use if any)
and set the configuration settings that you wish, and just play

so basically what i am saying, is your going to have to define "wacky"
by showing some errors or whatever else is happening / not happening ?
also what command do you issue to run it ?

No STEAM just HL 1.1.1.0 (installed without complaint)
WINE 20040121 (installed without complaint)

wine installed like a champ. not a single complaint. 3D acceleration via Nvidia is fine. Q3A pretty much jumps off the screen. I cleared up the 16 bit desktop thing via XF86Config (which I don't recall having to do under Slack 7.1 and an older wine)so....

command: wine --hl.exe -console
I have tried a couple different commands the restults are ........ wacky!

I can't get reliable errors. the game will always start and I see the menu quickly (but without sound). so lets say I fire up the game this time and it freezes from the get go. next time it might let me click something before it freezes. next time maybe I can start singleplayer (sound seems to work fine in-game). when i start multiplayer the little hour glass shows up and the game starts looking for servers......... for forever. no kidding. yesterday while it was looking for servers not only did the cows come home but they had a long lunch, a nap and then left again.

its pretty much just a grab bag of screw ups.

So like I said in my original post I would like to take a gander at a functional wine config file and eliminate that as a problem. according to 2 days of research Slack itself and X and 3D acceleration all appear to configured properly on this box.

Any clue?

i didn't even know it would work like that ....
try typing :
wine hl.exe -- hl.exe -console

and see if that works any better?

OK. I tried that command. While the menus became stable and an absolute pleasure to use (albeit no sound) the same major problem remains. The system hangs when I click on lan game. Here is the out put of wine from start to crash.

wingnut@phobos:~$ cd c/SIERRA/Half-Life
wingnut@phobos:~/c/SIERRA/Half-Life$ wine hl.exe -- hl.exe -windowed -console

RHL over the past few days I have ran across several people having problems with the new version of wine. But I haven't found any solutions yet. I'd like to thank DrOzz. His help at least stabilized the game so that I could do better trouble shooting but multiplayer remains elusive.

Tomorrow afternoon I believe I'm going to back up a version and give it a go. I'll post back here with results. Maybe it'll help.

This is the first time I've messed with wine since mid 2002 but I do know that at least then I was able to do multiplayer in HL and SOF2. Though I believe I had to do a work around to join a game. It seems like I had to join manualy through the console. Memory fails me and I'll just get confusing from here on out. Keep your eyes peeled and we'll work this thing out.

WingNut, could you please tell me what you did to clear up the 16-bit color problem in half life? Thanks.

yup. I had to modify my XF86Config file. Default color depth will be 24 just change that to 16. I've all but waved bye to wine. These newer versions are apparently missing a little something. SOF2 plays great (better than my windows box actually) until I apply the gold patch then its lost.

If you have better luck please let me know.

thanks.
