Diablo 2 and Damn Small Linux

I've been looking for alternatives for using Windows 98 to run Diablo 2 on a 500MHz machine with 256MB RAM. So, for some fun I've been trying out various lightweight versions of Linux on that PC. I've managed to get it running (or should I say limping) on said machine under WINE in Vector Linux Light, and it's quite stable, even if I can't do more much more than trade.

DSL or Damn Small Linux is extremely lightweight, and looks promising, but the nearest certified version of WINE that runs smoothly on DSL is 0.9.52. The certified version that runs Diablo II LOD is 1.1.21, although I have it running on 1.1.19, but there's a lot of versions for Debian and I'm not sure they'd work because DSL is Knoppix.

I've tried running 0.9.52 and it runs, only to crash after character selection. It's quite a bit of work to install/uninstall WINE for various Debian distros and thought that someone might be able to save me some time and sanity by helping me pare down the possibilities.

Has anyone tinkered with DSL (or some of the other very lightweight Linux kernels/APIs) and managed to get Diablo II to run on them? Suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to LQ!:)
Try tinycore linux
the maturation of DSL, made by man who made MyDSL
it's got Wine and it's really up-to-date too

I popped the CD in an hour or two ago. I'm puttering with the install, but time constraints don't permit me to resolve it immediately. However, it does look quite promising, and I'll be sure to come up with my results once I have it set up.

Thank you for the avenue :)
