Deus Ex

My first time on this forum, and I have learned you can run winblows games on linux. I know quake 3 is a linux game (along with other favorites), but will deus ex work on linux (I mean the winblow$ version)?(If not is there a linux version?). What do I need in order to run Deus ex? Will running a windows game on linux be slower than running a linux game on linux? If it matters I'll be using redhat 9. Thanks for any imput.

Note: Is there a certain distro that games run faster than other distros?

Hi Synesthesia!

And welcome to LinuxQuestions.org. I could run Deus EX perfecly under WineX3 (http://www.transgaming.com/gamepage.php?gameid=307). WineX is great Linux application which allows you to run windows games under Linux. It ain't free, but there's a free version through CVS. I'd recommend you getting the full version so you can get pre-compiled packages and it will simply make your life much easier :).

There's some installers around the net for you to run Windows games under Linux. I've not seem, but there might be one for Deus EX since it's Unreal T engine(?) and there's a lot of installers for Unreal T around. Take a look at google.
If you are willing to run games under Linux (and you should, because they are so smooth when running properly ;)) I really recommend you getting winex :) Diablo 2, Dungeon Siege, GTA 3 and Vice City.. the gaming world will be yours with WineX :D.

About speed... it's a pretty difficult questions to answer. It depends of your machine, if you have up-to-dated drivers, you amount of memory, the number of services running... I've used Redhat 9.0 for a long while, and it was pretty slow, but indeed, this is quite relative, and may be faster for you that it was for me. Just check to see if you're running too many unnecessary programs at the background. A lighter desktop as Blackbox instead of the heavy weight champions KDE and Gnome might help a bunch!.

Good luck and enjoy your stay in here :D

yeah, ive recently been playing it again under linux. in windows, i would get some error message befor eit even loaded up, so i decided to give it a go on linux, and to my surprise, it works...better than in windows.

i use winex3 and suse 9 (with 3d hardware support). i just go to a terminal (after mounting the DX cdrom) and type in "winex3 Setup.exe" and do the normal setup as if in windows. when it asks for th 3d device, go to Open GL (its faster). configure the resolution and graphics levels in the DX menu, and you're set to go. no glitches on my system, it works flawlessly. of course, winex3 does cost money, but it's well worth it if you're a gamer.

BTW, this is my 5th time beating the game from start to finish. assuming you're talking about the first game, not the newly released sequal "invisible war".

deus ex actually came very close to a linux native port, when loki (the people porting it) went bankrupt.

Where is the best place (on the web) to buy winex3? thanks for your help.

LavaDevil94 01-05-2004 05:50 PM

its at its homepage at:
http://transgaming.com
its a subscription service. i suggest getting it for 3 months and see if you like it.
you could also try regular wine, but thats less likely to work with directx games (the difference between the 2 is that winex has a more mature directx implementation). the wine homepage is:
http://winehq.de

Do you think deus ex could work in wine? Or only winex? thanks for the info.

LavaDevil94 01-06-2004 04:20 PM

ya, i think so. maybe even in wine. try wine first, then winex.

DAChristen29 01-06-2004 05:12 PM

it does work in wine, but better in winex3. i havent had much sucess in wine though. i NEVER got any program to rununder wine except office 2000 and deus ex and starcraft, and NOTHING ELSE !!!

i suggest winex3 though. its free if you get it from source CVS. RPM's are better though. i would recommend the subscription.

wheni ran DX under wine, the only 3d driver options i got was the software render, which was slow as hell. winex3 gave me ALL the options you can get in windows. the fastes is the OpenGL setup, use that.

i got soldat to run in wine20031212, if anyone knows of that game (if you dont, youre missing out. go to: http://soldat.pl ). its a little slow and the text is garbled on ingame screens, but that aside, theres only one limitation: you need to register using a reg key, which wine probably wouldnt find. but theres no time limit on the shareware version, so you can play (without a few features) to your hearts content.

Kupo 01-12-2004 07:11 PM

Lets keep it to the topic please? when wine is done there will be no more problems with games ever w00t :D which means we can play beloved deus ex: IW all we want

LavaDevil94 01-12-2004 08:07 PM

well, the fact is this: unless microsnot goes under, wine will ALWAYS be alpha software. its an intolerable fact, yet a fact.

Mega Man X 01-13-2004 02:54 AM

DeusEX is going to be ported for Linux pretty soon. In fact, there's a bunch of cool games coming out for Linux soon:

http://www.lokigames.com/products/

Take a look and see that DeusEX is under development. I'd like to have Heavy Metal FAKK2 as well, since it does not run under 2k/XP. Let's support it :)

DAChristen29 01-13-2004 09:04 AM

ive been running suse 9. i just switched over to slackware, and installe a slackware version of wine. i havent gotten Deus Ex to work successfully in it. tonight im going to compile wine from the source, and see if that makes a difference.
the reason i didnt try winex s because i had a winex3 RPM, and i installed that on suse 9. but slackware doesnt work with full RPM support, so i couldnt install winex3.rpm. so tonight ill try wine from the source, winex3.tgz (slackware version) and winex3 from the source, and ill report the outcome here and let you know which is best.

LavaDevil94 01-13-2004 03:28 PM

umm, megaman x, lokigames is dead, and its been dead for a while. it went bankrupt.
