CVS Cedega or WINE and running copy-protected games?
 

Is there a copy-protection emulator (similar to daemon tools for games on windows, www.daemon-tools.cc) that can be used to run copy-protected games on GNU/Linux?

Copy protection is so diverse that the answer is no. Some copy protected games can run on Wine but many cannot be.

Transgaming recommends installing a no-cd patch to bypass copy protection, as it cant seem to be emulated properly.

I have gotten Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Painkiller running using this method.

i guess it could just be a matter of getting daemon tools running on WINE. this program will emulate pretty much any copy-protection scheme. i ran doom 3 (on my windows box with daemon tools emulating the copy-protection) the day it came out.

i understand the cracked executable technique (and i've used it before), but i thought there might be something more universal and robust like daemon tools.

such a tool would perhaps be more secure than cracked executables (if it was free/open-source software). although a cracker that would try to take over a GNU/Linux box by modifying a windows executable has really found a convoluted and round-about method of achieving his/her goal. nevertheless, it is a possibility.

We want to be able to run games without cracking them, ideally.

Anyway, it's unlikely daemon tools would work .... some of the most problematic copy protection wants to do stuff like write to the MBR or depends on the location of suspended processes %eip and so on ....
