Change CD's during installation.

Using wine, I'm trying to install a naitive Windows game (Swat3) and it runs through really well. Problem is, when I try to change CD's during the process (when it asks for CD2 during install), I can't get the CDROM to eject.

I think that if I could just get the damn thing to open, I'd be able to finish installing and run this game.

Advice is appreciated!

I might also need to use winex because it does use direct x. That won't be a problem though. It's the damn CDROM giving me the problem!

Maybe you can copy the CD into your hard drive and point it there?

Is that normal during wine installations? I'm a linux newbie and this is only the third windoze app that I've installed using wine. (winamp and winmx were the other two and those weren't from cdrom)

I'm also unsure as to how I can point the installation routine at the hdd instead of the cdrom....your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks! :)

So while I'm installing, when it asks for cd2, I should open a terminal and type "umount /dev/CDROM(or whatever)" and I should be able to open the drive and insert disc2 without effecting the install?

GREAT! Can't wait to get home and try it. Thanks!

You should also be able to run 'eject' in a console and have it pop out if it unmounts but won't open(I've had it happen a few times.)

Kick ass guys, thanks for the help.

I believe (I"m not home yet to try), but I believe that I will run into problems when it tries to install directx because it requires directx 7 in order to run. Anyone have experience with this that can save me a few headaches I would greatly appreciate it!

A) Do NOT eject the cd without unmounting it. Because for it to recognize the new cd, you have to unmount and remout it again anyway. So you have to copy the CD's to your harddrive

B) If you're using WineX, do NOT let the game install DirectX, its version should work. If you're using Wine, I don't believe you can play DirectX games...

mmurch01 03-19-2004 02:09 PM

Yeah, this isn't going to work....

Damn...

LavaDevil94 03-19-2004 04:18 PM

you can use the winex cvs:
http://transgaming.org
but thats for free, and its a good idea to support them.

mmurch01 03-20-2004 05:46 AM

Well, I went and signed up, have winex running and having the same issue....

Damn... lol I can't win.

**EDIT**I have no idea where that url came from lol...

And no, I still can't win....this game is from 2000, it's old as dirt, and uses DX7. I just can't eject the fuggin CD...even when using winex...what I have to do is copy the files to the hdd first and try it that way...I doubt it will work though...trying to stay optimistic is futile at this point.

Yes you can, but not really modern games.

mmurch01 03-20-2004 12:15 PM

So since this game uses DX7, I should be able to install directx from the installation routine? Hopefully so because it won't let me install it if it doesnt detect dx7 or higher. I'm not sure if winex emulates dx7+ or not in instances like this....
