cannot connect to battle.net with Diablo 2

I got diablo 2 installed and running with cedega. the game itself runs, however it will not stay connected to battle.net. http://frankscorner.org/index.php?p=diablo2 was a great help in getting the game to connect at all. now it will connect for a short time, and the first time I connect it will appear to download the patch. however then it says "you were disconnected from battle.net. Please reconnect."

I don't think the patch ever installs or even downloads as I cannot find the patch file anywhere.

I also tried downloading the patch and installing it, however I then get an error saying that it cannot access BNupdate.exe (which is located in the Diablo II directory). and when I ran BNupdate.exe it said that the update was complete and successful, but then I couldn't get the game to run in any way, until I reinstalled it.

I'm at a loss, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I'm not 100% sure, its the university LAN that I am connect to. I don't believe that there is any firewall on it (and there isn't one running on my computer) because I can connect to battle.net with starcraft. thus I do not believe that I am behind a firewall.

I think you should ask your university admin to be sure he dont block D2 ports.

for info :
You must open ports on your router to allow incoming traffic while playing Diablo 2.
# Diablo 2 uses the following UDP/TCP port(s): 4000
# 6112 - 6119
