Can't connect 3 players in LAN Age of Mythology game

I've installed Age of Mythology: The Titans Expansion from disc on three separate Linux computers, all running Wine. Each computer runs the game very well. The only issue I have is that the game won't let me connect all 3 computers in a multiplayer LAN game at once. I can play 2-player LAN games just fine. I have DirectX installed through Wine.

I (player 1) am able to host a game and another computer (player 2) is able to join. Then, when the third computer (player 3) attempts to join, a "Connecting..." message appears where their name should go, and the connection times out after ~20 seconds, usually kicking out player 2 with it. Sometimes, instead of a "Connecting..." message, player 3's name appears briefly before disconnecting as usual.

All of this happens regardless of which physical machine is player 1/2/3. I've tested out every combination of hosting and joining, and nothing improves. However, all players can play if there are two separately hosted games, but I would like all players to be able to play the same game.

I can run a 3-player Age of Empires II LAN game, strangely enough. No issues with that.

Anybody know what could be the issue? I don't know whether it has to do with the games, Linux, Wine, or the network itself.

Edit: The same problem occurs if I use my phone's wireless hotspot.

Try running/launching the game from a terminal window. Paste any errors into code tags in your next post.

Also, have you confirmed that the game does indeed support 3+ players? I used to play this game way back when but do not recall it allowing more than 2 players at a time. I might be mistaken though since it was several years ago.

The best place to check for answers for any games running in Wine is WineHQ. Here is a link to Age of Mythology on wine hq.

I don't get any unusual messages when I run it through a terminal. I personally had never tried to play 3+ multiplayer before this, so I can't confirm from experience that it's even supposed to work. However, I've read some posts on various forums about 3+ player LAN, so I think it's worked before.

I've tried getting this to work about as much as I care to, and I get the feeling that I won't get it up and running. I think I'll have to stick to AoE II or buy the Steam version (which seems really cool anyway). I may post to WineHQ if I find the motivation.

Thanks for your reply.
