Question Benchmarking as benchmark[et]ing?

Orignal question which got cut off: Do you think benchmarking programs have influenced the computer gaming industry to standardize and lock into one platform?
I am trying to conduct a little experiment for a [would be] project of mine. When I gather all the information I may make public what did I find. For the time being, though, here's a poll for you!

Feel free to discuss the matter, it'd be interesting to know what do people elaborate upon their answers.

I hate computer games!

Played one for one day in about 1990. At the end of the day,
I realized I lost a whole day of my life doing something which
gave no return on my investment.

[opinion]
Computer games are a waste of time and resources.
[/opinion]

That being said, Nvidia is interested in Windoze and games.
The preponderance of people buying games, which constantly
need more FPS, has filled their pockets. So long as people
keep investing their leisure time in a silicon box, the
game makers will increase the need and Nvidia will have a
market to sell "the latest and greatest."

Wonder no more! Read the last line of the OP.

I didn't get her via the games forum, but via new threads.
