Well, the newest drivers dated 11/9/04 helped a little bit, I can now run the game approximately 5-10 minutes before bombing out. This is really ridiculous. When I heard id was coming out with a new game, I built a new computer so I could finally run a new game when it came out (instead of having to wait and buy it in the bargain bin a year from now, like I normally have to). I guess the only mistake I made was buying an ATI... I'm pretty proud of my new rig - 2.8G Athlon XP, 1Gb RAM, 80Gb & 40Gb HDD's, so, pretty decent system.

Does anybody else have this problem? Most of the time, it's a hard freeze. I have to press ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the X server and then can tell gdm to reboot. I can't even do a "sudo kill -9" on the doom.x86 process (it just won't die). Sometimes it kicks me back to the rxvt and I can read on the console that I got "telefragged" by a chair or somethin' and then the game received a seg fault.

Come on, everyone, give me your ATI horror stories, OR, let me know that it's something in my setup...

OH ho ho do I have ATI horror stories

Even in windows they manage to disappoint me, I had to completly re-install cause the tards had Fast-writes on the SMARTGART enabled by default. I had to install the omega drivers to figure that out. That is, after wiping windows clean since it wouldn't even start up in safe mode. I'm guessing something similar is happening with the fglrx modules, but who knows, there could be millions of things wrong with it.

I also emailed their customer care center about the possibility of better linux drivers on the horizon, and they had this to say:

I know this isn't very helpful to your problem but I assure you, you are not alone.

You've just been forsaken like the rest of us.
