Trouble booting the live-cd 6.2-5 (second attempt) on a CD Drive that reads other CDs

Hey all,

I'm having trouble booting the live-CD 6.2-5 it gets so far past the boot screen and then refuses to go any further. I've tried to copy a few of the lines of the boot screen (computer shuts down before I got them all).

hdc: media error (bad sector): status=0x51
hdc: media error (bad sector): error=0x30
ide: failed opcode was unknown

This is followed later by a message telling me that the CD in the drive is not recognized as the LFS CD. It then proceeds to check 3 times before shutting down the computer.

It would appear that I have a problem with my CD or CD Drive. However this is the second LFS CD I have tried and encountered the same problem on. Also I have had no other problems booting other live-CDs.

The CD Drive is a LITEON CD-ROM LTN486S

Thanks for your time

Did you do an md5sum check against the .iso file to verify the image isn't corrupted? You could also try re-burning using a max burn speed of 4x. The problem could be the cd media, try using a different brand.

Well I've just checked the CD on two other computers and it works fine. So it can't be the CD. Must be my drive? Though I haven't had problems with other live CDs. To make things a bit easier I've copied the entire boot screen error message:

Quote:
hdc: media error (bad sector): status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error}
hdc: media error (bad sector): error=0x30 {LastFailed Sense=0x30}
ide: failed opcode was unknown
end-request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 64
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 8
/dev/hdc: Volume ID is
This is not correct CD: Moving on.....
I couldn't find any LFS Live CD in any drive!!
I'm going to wait 10 secs then try again
(this repeats 3 times)

UPDATE!

I've 'solved' the problem by 'borrowing' my sister's cd drive. The cd now boots fine and I'm up and running.

If anyone knows what exactly was wrong with my other drive (see the posted error log above) I'd appreciate an answer or a point in the right direction.

Thanks to {BBI}Nexus{BBI} for the advice. I may call on your wisdom again in the future!

When is the last time you cleaned the computer?
You might only need to clean that drive. There are special CDs for the purpose.

Liteon Cd-rom Ltn486s

Just not supported I'm afraid (from my experience).

I have this CD-ROM drive in an old IBM NetVista desktop system. The only distro I could install was Zenwalk 4.8 [www.zenwalk.org].

openSuSE 10.2 / Ubuntu 5.10, 6.06, 7.10 / Mandriva 2006 / all fail to install with this CD-ROM drive
THIS IS NOT AN EXTENSIVE LIST - just the distros I had around at the time.

So, stick with Zenwalk 4.8 or change the drive.
Thanks.
