Successful LFS (with package users) build!
 

Hi all,

I just have to brag a little bit. After two months of evenings (working slowly as this was my first time), I booted into my new LFS system tonight!

Slackware 13.1 was just about the perfect host for LFS. I even use LILO to boot into my new build. ;)

Was Slackware really your host or was Slackware just the host that was running your virtual machine? From your Screenshot I would suspect the latter.

Slackware is both.

I run Slackware as my day to day OS, but I also installed a fresh copy of it in the QEMU-KVM virtual machine.

I created a blank 60 GB disk image and then installed Slackware_13.1 (32 bit) in the virtual machine. I used that to build LFS and had no problems with it as a host. Nothing needed to be installed and I did not have to make any changes to the host OS to build LFS.

What you see in the screen shot, of course, is LFS running in the virtual machine, running in Slackware.

Congratulations, I've build LFS a couple of times and felt the same everytime. Planning on building LFS according to the most recent version of the LFS book soon.

The LFS developers do a fantastic job of putting everything together and explaining it well. I particularly like the process of building a system up from the bottom and adding what I want/need rather than trying to figure out from a whole, complete system how everything relates.

I really like the package users package management scheme. It is surprisingly simple but effective, and I like that it only uses utilities built into Linux.

My next step is to repartition my IBM Thinkpad's hard drive and build LFS for it instead of in a virtual machine. It's an older Pentium III, so compiling software may take a while, but I think I'll get very good performance out of LFS, and eventually BLFS, on it when I'm done.
