SATA RAID on RH ES 3

*** Sorry for this post here. I changed my mind about posting in this LFS forum, but could not see how I could Delete it***

*** I did post in the RH forum, so please ignore if you are upset, or cannot help***

I have been trying to make SATA raid work on my Linux server for a few days now without a 100% solution.

I have RedHat Enterprise 3 Server ES.
I have on-board Promise FastTrack TX4 RAID controller (I am trying not to use it), and an on-board Intel (it says Adaptec HostRAID though when loading) ICH5-R RAID bios.

I read that the Intel ICH5-R is more stable then the Promise, so I chose that route.

I am trying to setup 2 80GB drives in a RAID-1 setup that I can boot Linux from.

Since *my version* RedHat does not support either of these chipsets out of the box, I decided to install onto a regular PATA drive, then migrate the data to the raid once it all seems to function.

I used bitkeeper and 'cloned' the libata-2.4 repository.
I then configured the kernel to enable SATA support, and modularized all the chipsets.
I then built the kernel & modules, installed the modules, made the initrd, installed the kernel, updated grub, and rebooted.

* Here's my problem! *
Even though the drives are configured in the ICH5-R bios as MIRROR (RAID-1) 1 volume of 80GB the driver is detecting them seperatly as /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. I would like it to find them as *1* volume of 80GB.

See the following data from `dmesg`
