I've done a stage 1 Gentoo install without too much difficulty, is installing LFS basically that but without portage to help? I've been using Gentoo for a bit and I like how it's very basic but I do not like portage at all, much prefer to have more control over what I install, what versions I install etc. So yeah, whats the difference between LFS and a stage 1 Gentoo install?
AFAIK even on Gentoo, you are not constrained to using the portage system?! LFS could be very hard-core to someone who is used to emerge scripts. Most people regard LFS as a learning tool rather than a production-environment distro.
No you're not stuck using portage, but I'd just rather start clean and since I have no intentions of using it, why have it? If LSF isn't really a production distro, what about DSL? Does that sound more like it would suit me?
