.//program-build directories

Perhaps this question is addressed somewhere in the LFS book but i couldnt find it, so here goes... when building some programs (such as bin-utils, e2fsprogs, glibc, etc) do the instructions call for creating a seperate "program-build" directory? Does this create certian advantages or does it just "have to be done" this way?

thanks in advance :D

No advantages, just how the installation docs for those packages recommend installing that package. More information can be found in the lfs-dev mailinglist archives.
