did you install gawk correctly?
in this case the installation process is using ubuntus mawk instead, what causes the problems.

could you please post the ./configure output

' gawk ' is in the minimum "Host System Requirements"
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/.../hostreqs.html

All twenty packages must be present.

And ' mawk ' will not work !

Please read post # 3 and the link again.
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/.../hostreqs.html

It is not about any LFS packages, the "Host" is your Ubuntu,
I guess, and the packages should be installed before you begin
building LFS :
sudo apt-get install gawk <and-all-the-other-19-packages>
.....

Hi,

Your host does NOT have gawk but mawk:
Code:
...
checking for gawk... no
checking for mawk... mawk
As knudfl already said, you are using Ubuntu as host and therefor you have mawk installed by default. Correct this on your Ubuntu-host first and start over. Since you are still at the beginning it would be adviseable to start over at the beginning of chapter 5 with freshly untarred sources.
