pkgconfig, configure scripts and PKG_CONFIG_PATH

Hi.

Currently when I compile into different prefixes, the
programs put their .pc files into the prefix.

I'd like to have only ONE location where ALL .pc files
are stored.

Is it somehow possible to use a configure option to
explicitely store all .pc files?

I'd want to get rid of keeping many different
directories in PKG_CONFIG_PATH (which I currently
have to do, or I'd have to copy all .pc files
to the final "proper" location. But to be honest,
copying the .pc files seems to be a tedious
task - the .pc files should be put into the right
location in the first place, that would be much
better)

Most interestingly today pkg-config seemed to have been confused about
PKG_CONFIG_PATH. I guess its time to work through the source of
it to understand whats going wrong :(
