Exclamation Not enough PTYs in chroot

I was in the middle of installing LFS from the livecd, when I got an error. I got up to the binutils package in Chapter 6 but executing the following statement failed:
expect -c "spawn ls"
It said something like there are not enough PTYs. In the book, all it said was basically "if you have this error, fix it." Running the same command from another terminal (one which is not chrooted) works just fine. The error only occurs from the chroot environment. Any ideas how to fix it? I have followed the book exactly except for one command that screwed up my gcc, which I had to reinstall, then run the command with a slightly different syntax.
