not able to use live cd properly

i was using ubuntu as my host system but due to host system requirement and dependencies i was unable to carry out.i was then adviced to move to live cd...
i have downloaded isoimage("lfslivecd-x86-6.3-r2160-nosrc") of live cd and i am using it to build LFS system in vmware6.0 with a 8gb blank space....it is mentioned in the home page of livecd website that

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Includes all sources and the LFS Book
This spares you from having to download all the packages individually, which can be quite time consuming. It also removes the need for a working internet connection.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

i am sorry but i am not able to find the packages and patches...i have completed chapter 4 and no idea how to start chapter 5 as i cant find any packages....(for the information i have also downloaded the required packages and patches as i first planned to build the LFS system in ubuntu)....

can anyone help me out....waiting egarly for the reply.....

thnx in advance......

shobhitsharda 06-01-2009 11:23 AM

is there any one who can help me??????

Hello,

As the name said no-scr there are no sources on that cd/dvd.
So you have to download them.

and one more thing as i said i have already downloaded the packages and i have stored that in ma pendrive but i am not able to mount it when i am running the live cd.

thnx in advance......

Hi,

- lfslivecd-x86-6.3-r2160.iso holds the LFS 6.3 packages and the 6.3 book (that is 6.3, _not_ 6.4).

- what error are you getting when trying to mount the pendrive / which command did you use? You should be able to mount it, did you use the correct filesystem?

shobhitsharda 06-02-2009 08:12 AM

will that not detect the pendrive automatically.if not what command i should use????

druuna 06-02-2009 08:22 AM

Hi,

I don't think the liveCD comes with automounting.

It depends a bit on the filesystem that's on the pendrive. I'll assume it is vfat:

mount -t vfat /dev/<SDX> /mnt/<DIR>

Replace SDX with the appropriate device (sdb1, sdc2 something like that) and DIR with the appropriate dir (this dir should be present already). The device can be found in the logfile (probably /var/log/messages).

shobhitsharda 06-02-2009 08:55 AM

i cant find any device,when i type 'fdisk -l' this is what it shows me

Disk /dev/sda: 8589 MB, 8589934592 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1044 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 1044 8385898+ 83 Linux

and when i check var/log i get this

root [ /var/log ]# ls
btmp lastlog wtmp Xorg.0.log

but my vmware is showing that it is detected....

Hi,

Vmware.......

I never tried installing LFS under vmware.

I do wander how you boot from the liveCD and end up in vmware...... Probably my lack of knowledge about vmware.

fdisk -l should come up with the pendrive/usb stick once it is inserted (could take a few seconds):

Code:

$ fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
.
.
.

Disk /dev/sdb: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
.
.
.

Disk /dev/sdc: 2021 MB, 2021654016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 245 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

  Device Boot      Start        End      Blocks  Id  System
/dev/sdc1  *          1        246    1974240    6  FAT16
Partition 1 has different physical/logical endings:
    phys=(244, 254, 63) logical=(245, 200, 18)

The bold part is what you need.

You could also try this (after inserting the pendrive and waiting a few seconds): ls -ltr /dev
This should show the device as (one of) the last entries shown (probably a sdYX entry, Y being a letter and X being a number).

shobhitsharda 06-02-2009 10:05 AM

when i gave this

ls -ltr /dev
.
.
.
.
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-06-01 19:23 snd
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 2 2009-06-01 19:23 midi
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2009-06-01 19:23 input
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 9 2009-06-01 19:23 dmmidi
crw------- 1 root tty 4, 1 2009-06-02 03:04 tty1
crw-rw---- 1 root root 254, 5 2009-06-02 03:49 usbdev2.6_ep81
crw-rw---- 1 root root 254, 6 2009-06-02 03:49 usbdev2.6_ep02
crw-rw---- 1 root root 254, 4 2009-06-02 03:49 usbdev2.6_ep00
crw-rw---- 1 root root 189, 133 2009-06-02 03:49 usbdev2.6
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 5, 2 2009-06-02 03:54 ptmx

and when i tried to mount usbdev2.6_ep81 to usbdev2.6 then i am getting this error in all the case.....

root [ / ]# sudo mount -t vfat /dev/usbdev2.6 /mnt/pendrive
mount: /dev/usbdev2.6 is not a block device

Hi,

This could be vmware related, if that is the case, I cannot help.

Only thing I found (you probably did as well, although you did not mention it.......) is the following on the lfs livecd page:
Quote:

VMWARE ISSUE

This CD does not detect virtual SCSI disks connected to a virtual machine in VMware Workstation 5.x or earlier or VMware Server 1.0.3 or earlier. This is a known VMware bug. The solution is to upgrade to VMware Workstation >= 6.0 or VMware Server >= 1.0.4.

The following workarounds help for older versions of VMware products:

Choose “BusLogic” as the virtual SCSI controller type instead of the default “LSI Logic”.

Pass the “mptbase.mpt_channel_mapping=1” option to the kernel command line.

The same issue will be present on an LFS system built from this CD.

Hi,

I do hope you are trying to be funny........ There are 3 directories, how hard can it be to figure out that the lfs-sources directory holds all the lfs sources........

shobhitsharda 06-02-2009 12:06 PM

thnx druuna for a great help....but i just downloaded the iso and not started with it.i just asked bcoz so that if it some where else i need not waste ma time in searching............thanx a lot any way.....:):)

druuna 06-02-2009 12:13 PM

Hi again,

I do wonder what we have been discussing in this thread:

If that is true, were did you try to mount the pendrive????? Anywhere else but the liveCD is pointless.
