No locales installed
 
LFS build 7 Ubuntu 11.04 host

Ok so I have made a problem for myself.
I,m here
Code:
locale -a
returns C, POSIX only, Now I see where i went wrong in, glibc-2.14.1 I ran make install but must have missed the next part/s
Code:
mkdir -pv /usr/lib/locale "etc"
now is this fixable considering where I am, I have done the stripping & cleaning up part at end of chapter6.
I have looked at where the mkdir comes it is after make install of glibc so I,m thinking it should be ok, but i am unsure.

I seem to have just missed that part. glibc 6.9.2 was done.

My 1st thought is to unpack glibc again create glibc-build then complete the missing part
2nd is redo glibc again

I would just enter the build directory glibc-build and issue the the commands... since nothing should be linked to what locals you have installed it would be harmless to try.

Hi,

The first thing I would try is to install the locale part (and not redo all of glibc). Unpack the glibc package and start with one of these commands:
Code:
mkdir -pv /usr/lib/locale
localedef -i cs_CZ -f UTF-8 cs_CZ.UTF-8
localedef -i de_DE -f .........

i.e. the specific locales you want/need

or, installing all locales available:

make localedata/install-locales
If that doesn't work: Redo all of glibc except the touch /etc/ld.so.conf and make install steps (the toolchain is re-adjusted after this step).

Ok it was solved by creating glibc-build again then ran the command

mkdir -pv /usr/lib/locale
localedef -i en_US -f ISO-8859-1 en_US
Allthough I need en_GB.
make localedata/install-locales failed.

This had to be done by rebuilding glibc completely then running the final command

Hi,

Glad to see you got it (partially) fixed.

Have you tried: localedef -i en_GB -f ISO-8859-1 en_GB to get the en_GB you need?

Yes I got the en _GB but as mentioned I had to rebuild glibc so to extract those locales the basic 1,s were ok by just entering glibc-build without building but all is ok thks.

Not sure if I need to make a new post for this, but I'm at the same part and cannot get the canonical name.

Code:
LC_ALL=<en_US.iso88591> locale charmap
returns: bash: en_US.iso88591: No such file or directory.

Unlike OP I am getting back all the charmaps when I use "locale -a"

EDIT: I've also tried "en_US" "en_US.utf8" and "en_GB.iso88591" with same results.

EDIT2: /usr/lib/locale only has "locale-archive" in it... is this right?
