Anyways, just to make sure, what version is your kernel?
I've tried 2.6.37 and 3.0.3 (I am using this one now). I also tried 2.6.39, my Gentoo kernel, for which hardware 3D works fine in Gentoo.

Nope, kernel 3.0.3 didn't make it as fast as it should be. I'm working on other things, but might check this occasionally. I'm not sure where the problem is. I did deviate slightly in terms of versions for various things (for example, using Mesa 7.10.3 instead of 7.9), so maybe the problem is there. I reinstalled all of the Xorg components (libraries, applications, protocol headers, et cetera) in case I missed something (and I used all the standard versions for these from the 28 July Subversion B.L.F.S. manual), but that didn't help, ether.

That's the one that I started with. I doubt that trying it again would make any difference.
