Multi lib with current LFS?
 
Hi, I have a perfectly working dev version of LFS, would it be possible to follow CLFS's instructions to make it both 32 and 64 bit or am I dreaming?

Hi,

You want to "upgrade" your current LFS by using (some of) the CLFS instructions? That is not possible (or: Yes, you are dreaming ;) )

You can use LFS as host to build a CLFS system from scratch, but I don't think that was your question.

Thanks druuna, would it be possible to make a new system by following CLFS but use updated sources? (CLFS is seriously falling behind)

Hi,

I don't have any experience with CLFS, never had the need for it.

But I would be careful with replacing packages with newer versions. I have tried that with LFS and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't (other ways of building, different patches [if any] and dependencies that could break. to name a few issues).

If you are patient and don't mind starting from scratch a few times if things do go wrong I would say: Go for it!

I guess it also depends on what you want to do with the end-product. If this is only an exercise and you don't plan on using CLFS on a daily base, I would give it a go. If you are planning to fully use it I would not.

One other tip: If you have little or no experience with building a (C)LFS system I would suggest staying with the book and its mentioned packages. First get a feel how things are done before you deviate in any way (most common problems are caused by not following the book).

Thank you again, have experience in building CLFS, the only real reason why i need CLFS is I have 16gb RAM + vid card 1 GB ( and PAE support is not doing me any favors if you know what i mean) I need mutli lib support however because I have 32bit binaries (mostly games that are long dead) so i need to compatibility, or I would have built LFS with 64bit support and called it a day.

A workaround would be to make a 32 bit LFS system on another partition just for your games

not really a work around, its mostly a waste of space, why make extra partitions? your dividing up your free space and limiting file structure, sure I could be careful but over time I will run out of space one way or another, the key to me is how long is that going to take, by dividing up my drive space anymore then it is, would hinder my ability to keep a desktop longer then a 3 years or so, (I don't like reinstalling things unless there is an update that enhances the program or if there is a server bug.)
