I've installed gnome on my LFS box (probably a mistake, but never mind). When I put an audio cd in the drive, I get the message on the screen "Cannot mount the Audio CD. Location is not mountable"
Well, since the cd doesn't contain a file system, I know it cannot be mounted. What is wrong here? Why doesn't gnome-mount tell hal that it's an audio cd. Ideally an icon should then appear on the desktop which I can click on to see the files on the cd. I use Grip to rip the cd and it works okay. Xine also plays it with no problems. I would just like to get rid of this pesky message at the outset.
Any sensible suggestions anyone? (ones involving using KDE, uninstalling gnome or to ignore the message would not be helpful!)
I believe that you are simply missing the Gnome libraries to detect and automount that type of media/medium.
I looked at what media detection libraries were installed on my system. There are too many to list.
I believe that if you install a Gnome based music player or a Gnome based CD/DVD burning application then the dependencies for that application will be installed as well. This should allow Gnome to automount a music CD.

okay, I've installed Rhythmbox and when I go to Music -> import file -> audio cd the "Can't mount Audio CD. Location is not mountable" message appears. At least it is consistent!
Could this be a problem with one of the udev rules, do you think?
I am out of ideas. I was very confident that the problem was caused by missing libraries and that installing an application that needs those libraries would fix the problem.
If you just insert a prerecorded commercial music CD into the CD drive it should automatically start Rhythmbox and show you the list of tunes on the CD. I just tried this on my Gnome computer. Rhythmbox opened in a panel icon, not a full sized window. The icon looks like an iPod.
