astrogeek, thank you for your input but I disagree. I think asshil16's question is relevant and in the right place: If you screw up like we did, where do you start over?

With regards to detailing the problem, asshil16 has stated that he/she has made the same mistake that I made, that is failing to set the 'CC', 'AR' and 'RANLIB' variables before configuring the GCC build in 5.10. GCC-4.9.1 - Pass 2 (current stable book) leading to a badly linked GCC.

asshil16, in response to your question my best guess is that you should step back to 5.10. GCC-4.9.1 - Pass 2 and make sure to get the configuration right this time (don't forget the sanity check!). Also, don't be afraid to start over, you'll be much faster the second time around... and the third - It took me four attempts to get this right. (Yeah, yeah, laugh all you want!)

Good luck!
BR,
Crow

Hi crow43, and thanks for your help and comments.

There has been some recent discussion here on LQ regarding a recent uptick in posts which do not include relevant information and/or often resurrect older threads with a remark similar to "I am having this problem too...". All too often we seem to spend a page or two asking for more specific details, or troubleshooting a problem "just like his" which actually isn't. The result is a lower overall quality of information available for others looking for solutions.

As a result of that discussion some members are trying to improve the overall quality of information on LQ, both in questions and answers, by trying to help get threads, especially of newer members, off to their best start with hopefully helpful suggestions such as mine. All intended to be helpful (no thread police here!).

Also, by starting their own thread, their question will continue to be advanced to the top of the list until answered, whereas posting to an existing thread can result in a question never being noticed.

As it turns out, you have replied yourself and included some helpful information and encouragement for aashil16 - very much appreciated and helpful! aashil16 also opened a separate thread on the topic here, feel free to comment there as well!

And glad to see you are still active here at LQ! You participation is always welcomed and appreciated!
