On the dependencies, they probably won't affect the operation much. Although they're used by a lot of packages besides CUPS and they don't take long to install, so why not install them anyways?
I'd say just install CUPS, I don't believe I've seen anyone with LPRng installed really.
CUPS is probably the best way to go. If you happen to have an old program that expects the lpr protocol, there is a way to support those within CUPS.
The web-based admin frontend (http://localhost:631) is probably its nicest feature. It supports most printers, even some oddball ones, and seems to work right out of the box.
