lfs on vmware - EXT2-fs error

hi,
i just started using the lfs live cd on vmware and i got as far as pass 1 of compiling binutils. the configure script runs fine and finishes with no errors whatsoever but when i run "make" it gives me the following errors:

EXT2-fs error (device dm-0): ext2_get_inode: unable to read inode block - inode=124309 block=229680
Buffer I/O error on device dm-0, logical block 0
lost page write due to I/O error on dm-0
printk: 4 messages suppressed.

this actually keeps scrolling on screen with the inode numbers changing until the build process finally quits

i've searched the forums and one indication that was given for the "ext2-fs error" problem was that the hard disk might be dying. this does'nt seem to be the case here as the host system(windows xp) that im running vmware on is faultless.

oh and in vmware i've made it use ide emulation on the virtual disk as opposed to scsi which it normally uses so that i would'nt have to download a scsi kernel again.i was'nt sure if the live cd had an scsi kernel.

I'd really appreciate any help, thanx
