LFS on laptop

What do I need to do in order to get LFS working on my Laptop. Its a 486 DX 50 with 8mb of ram. I only want network (pcmcia) support and a email reader because it will be used to plug into a network, store a few files and read my email.

I have LFS on my main machine which is a Duron 1Ghz if thats any help.

You most likely don't want to compile an LFS system directly on that machine, it'll take forever and I doubt the harddrive is big enough to contain both a host distro and the temp disk spce needed to compile a beast like Glibc.

you'll need to cross-compile from your Duron and compile all the binaries as i386 files. Please check the LFS mailinglist archives and search engine on how to do this. There is a wealth of information regarding cross-compiling in the LFS archives, so you can find all the info you need.

THen after you compiled an LFS system on the Duron, somehow transfer it to the Laptop. Perhaps install a tiny distro like uhm whatever (zipslack?) or boot from a cdrom (hm the 486 probably doesn't support booting from a cd, so find a boot floppy) and then unpack the tar file you created on the duron on a partition on the 486.
