Gnome is a gui - a desktop environment. There's a description at wikipedia if it helps. There are some methods for sharing files between the vbox guest and host here

Is that the sort of thing you were looking for?

the gnome part, yes, it helps to know that once i build/compile gnome i will have a gui to work with. the file sharing part... not so much. i was hoping there'd be an easy way of doing it, like creating a folder within .hidden_folder or something. i don't want to set up a server because that opens me to risks rather than keeping me from them. everything i do on vbox is local.

i was told to use 'garnome'. editing GARCHIVE in gar.conf.mk. i did that... but... when i download using 'garnome'(having CDed to garnome-*.*.**'s folder) to the place i specified in gar.conf.mk, i can't find it the files. i'm doing this so that i can transfer the files to a seperate machine, the computer that i will be compiling on now that i have my external cd drive. ^_^~

any ideas ?

You don't have to set up any server with VirtualBox - look at shared folders.
