Try rebuilding the kernel with this configuration:

For x64: http://mirrors.slackware.com/slackwa...ge-3.14.18.x64

For x86: http://mirrors.slackware.com/slackwa...mp-3.14.18-smp

Now use this to rebuild the kernel in chroot (this method will work best with the latest Linux Kernel from www.kernel.org ).:

Code:
mv -v config-* /sources/linux-*/.config
cd /sources/linux-*
make olddefconfig
Now follow up with the rest of the kernel build instructions and install the kernel as the book points out.

You can try gnome 3 only if you have built lfs systemd; of course you have to read blfs systemd version.
You can do what you want, probably is a good idea now to read and follow immediately the instructions in chapter 2 and 3; then install nano, wget, sudo, dhcp and iptables and of course X (chapter 24).
