LFS finished... Which Windowing system should i install first ? GNOME ? KDE ? xfce ?

Now that i have completed LFS , i wanted to give more functionality to LFS by installing a Windowing system , so that i can accomplish easy tasks like surfing , exploring , etc .

Can someone suggest , which one should i go for ? I love simplicity .

Hi

The 1st thing you will need is X window that is the base for all other desktops.
Gnome KDE xfce can then be built. Which 1 do you want????

Well If you love simplicity the best choice for you is XFCE: is fast to install(few packages than others) and very light(my actual LFS only uses 80MB of 4000MB of RAM). GNOME 3 is the most beautiful but it's slow and very little user-friendly so I suggest to discard it. I've never tried KDE but seems to be very very heavy and not so beautiful.

+1 on xfce

aashayshah 03-07-2013 11:54 AM

I started with xfce and on first package i.e. libxfce4ui-4.10.0 i got a configure error claiming that X Window system libraries and header files are required .

Please help !

Ps- I have installed dependencies like Perl modules , intltool , pkg-config .

Hi

Yes post 2 you need it before any desktop Gnome, Kde, Xfce, Lxde

X will give you a VERY basic desktop as well

What spiky0011 said. Linux windowing systems ride on top of X.

I think X includes TWM by default.

I would suggest you start with a simple window manager, such as Blackbox or Fluxbox, before you try a desktop such as KDE, Gnome, or XFCE. There's no problem with them all co-existing on the same install.

And congratulations on have a working LFS install. I looked at the book. I think that's quite an accomplishment.

giuliom_95 03-08-2013 12:38 AM

Well, you can install, after X, a simple window manager but I think that is useless because Openbox and co. have only some better features than twm (the default manager shipped with X.org) so, in my opinion, you can go straight to Xfce installation process.

how can i have have two or more windowing system co-exist on LFS ? How can i have X and xfce both working on same system ?

Hi

X windows is the base to build the desktop of choice, You can also have lots of different desktops and choose which 1 to use from a login manager
