LFS 6.4 Running debugfs -R feature /dev/<xxx>

In Chapter 2.3. Creating a File System on the Partition

When I run the debugfs -R feature /dev/<xxx> command on my USB stick I get the ouput:

has_journal, resize_inode, dir_index, filetype, sparse_super, large_file or needs_recovery

The ext_attr and needs_recovery features are missing.

The chapter says there could be a problem if there are extra features. But is it a problem if some of the features are missing?

Hi,
just out of curiosity, did you formate ext3 or fat32?

The debugfs is a test of your hosts e2fsprog, not the usb device itself

The book does't mention missing features, so i'd try the books suggestion and compare the results

cd /tmp
tar -xjvf /path/to/sources/e2fsprogs-1.xx.x.tar.bz2
cd e2fsprogs-1.xx.x
mkdir -v build
cd build
../configure
make #note that we intentionally don't 'make install' here!
./misc/mke2fs -jv /dev/<xxx>
cd /tmp
rm -rfv e2fsprogs-1.xx.x

If you still get the same result then its not caused by your host.

I've not built LFS 6.4 on a USB yet (hd only) but i'd be interested in your results.

Good luck

I formatted using ext3. I have to admit this is the 3rd time I am creating a LFS system on a USB stick.

The first was LFS 6.3 kernel 2.6.22.5 with the gpm and lynx packages from BLFS6.3 as well as ClamAV, which I am using as the host to build my 3rd on a 16GB USB stick. (The 2nd was LFS 6.4 on a 4GB USB stick).

I was trying to see if it was possible to create a graphical system without using X. I tried SVGALIB but I just could couldn't get it to compile on my second stick and having mucked around with 3 different kernels I decided to bite the bullet and install X; hence the 16 GB stick.

So what I'm doing is going right back to the beginning and try and fix all the things that looked like problems but didn't prevent the system being built.

I know what you suggest in the book works as I have done that but I was just interested if anyone knew if missing features would be a problem as I don't want to get half way through installing X and have something fail because of something that looked trivial at the beginning.

So I will be posting a lot of questions in the near future

Now I know I'm asking for trouble installing on a USB stick instead of a hard drive but I already have Mandriva installed and I really like the idea of being able to use a system that I have created myself on any PC (well ones that can be booted from a USB stick).
