KF5/Plasma 5 anyone?

I've had great success in building KF5 (KDE Frameworks 5) and Plasma 5 using the current 5.8.0 and 5.2.1 versions respectively. To keep my well-functioning KDE4 system intact, all of the installation was done into the /opt directory.

The building and install process were error free but runtime yields only a black screen with the Oxygen mouse cursor -- nothing else. All shared libraries resolve. I can provide much more in the way of detail but want to find out if anyone else has tried this latest offering from the KDE folks?

I'm perfectly happy with KDE4 and it's a great desktop environment. The KF5/Plasma 5 experiment was just that -- an experiment only. My guess is that KF5/Plasma 5 is following the same path of KDE4 and that it will take a while for it to settle.

I've written the original instructions by using /opt as a testing point and everything was working fine. You can try and revise your configuration using the instructions mentioned at

I know KDE5 session manager works through logind, but will it work with logind alternatives like Consolekit2 with loginkit?

That depends on how good logind api emulation is. It should work with the old ConsoleKit just fine as far as I know. No hard dependency on logind (or systemd library) exists that I saw.

ConsoleKit2 does perform a lot of the new protocols that logind uses for session management. LoginKit is more or a systemd-logind shim that uses ConsoleKit2 as a backend.

I'm hoping that ticket I submitted about ConsoleKit2-0.9.2 gets worked into BLFS eventually.

I'm making this thread SOLVED thanks to these well-written steps. I deviated only with the versions, QT-5.4.1 and 5.8.0/5.6.2/5.2.2 for the various KDE components. My initial -- mostly futile -- attempt was based on following these steps:

https://community.kde.org/Frameworks/Building/Details

Although everything compiled and installed cleanly (after reordering the package building sequence), the Plasma workspace never launched. I'll still stick with KDE4 but it's good to know that KF5/Plasma5 works.

So, thanks for bringing clarity to the process!
