Keyboard (any) doesn work on LFS 6.1.1
 

I have been working through LFS to learn more about the way Linux works. Unfortunately, even though I have finshed the book without many problems, I now have one that I can fix. My keyboard doesn't work at all under it. I have a wireless keyboard/mouse set (KB998 if that's any help) whereas this works fine for grub, and every other distro I've installed. I can find what I'm missing, from the kernel config or otherwise. I even tried my old PS2 keyboard. This worked if I plugged it in on the logon prompt. It gave this:
Unfortunately this didn't work when I left it plugged in and booted, it didn recognise it again. The only way I could get it to recognise it at all was by using my wireless keyboard to get through grub, then using the wired one to login... but even then I had a problem. it let me type my login name, as soon as I pressed enter, it repeated it... I haven found any way of stopping this yet.

As Ie probably mentionned in every one of my posts, I don know a lot about Linux, but I am trying to learn, which was the whole point of LFS to begin with

Is your kernel configuration non-modular?

Did you compile the keyboard map into the kernel before you compiled it?

Hi, I followed the book absolutely, so as far as I know I did compile a keyboard map, as for modular or not, I first tried a non-modular configure as it recommends, installing everything I needed, including ALSA USB support (another story) and other USB Support for my wireless keyboard/mouse but that didn't work, I tried all combinations I could think of (except obviously the correct one) I have got the configuration file on my other computer, i can send that/paste bits if you think that would help

I'm sorry I'm not much good at this, I really don't know much about kernel configuration, when I did it I left everything that I wasn't sure about as it was, enabled things I was sure I had and disabled things I was sure I didn't have (like a lego tower :s) further than that I don't know. I'm still trying my best to learn though

What I did when I made my non-modular kernel is I just kept
testing it on my working distro with a working kerenel.

I used the process of elimination:
By disabling general parts of the configuration I could narrow down the parts I needed, and didn't need. Gradually narrowing it down more, and more until I just had what I needed for everything to work right.

This took me along time, but compilation got faster as disabled things.

I did all of this while having a backup kernel that I could choose anytime at bootup from the bootloader. (That way if something went wrong I had a way of fixing it, and go back to testing)

Ok then, thanks. I just aquired a second computer that I think I'm going to start building LFS on again, but it won't be for a few months. Thanks for your help anyway. When I get that PC set up with LFS (planning on it being a mini server, file storage, website testing etc) that I'll try this one again, knowing me they'll both have totally different problems even though, as far as I can tell, I don't do anything different... ahh well... such is life...
