no you would only need to change grub.cfg if you renamed the kernel or put it on a different partition, otherwise it will be the same.

Do make sure you go through the kernel menu and check the help for advice

Alright, I'm done setting up the new kernel, now my system doesn't kernel panic but is now sitting at:

for the past 10 minutes. is that normal?

just ignore what I said earlier.. it worked after I had hard reset the VM.

Not normal, Never seen that before, so maybe a bit of googling or some else has an idea
