If anyone has recently completely the linux from scratch system from the new book . Can you please use paste bin or something to paste what you did to get the system up and running . I am having problems with the book . Everytime i get into chapters 5 and 6 I always run into programs where I try to install them as the book and it says they are installed and working but when I go to install other programs that use the previous program to work it tries to tell me that the program isnt installed when I can clearly see that they are installed in the directly listings . So Please paste bin me a copy of what you did to get your system up and running . Because the book just isnt helping me at all .

Where are you upto in the book.

Alright here is what was going on i did chapters 1 - 4 to get the file system up and running for the install and then when i got to the part where im suppose to install the software to develop the system what I did was i had the original terminal open and i had a kde gui open to drag and drop the files into the file directory instead of copying from the terminal . And then after i coped them over to the file then went to install the bin utils . Then when i went to install the second part that uses the first part it gave up an error trying to tell me there was no such file by that name . That is why i was asking someone to post a paste bin of the commands they did to get the entire system installed . So that I can see what im doing wrong so i can complete a system successfully . Does that explain it well enough ?

This will not help, but I follow the book to the letter. Even though that comment was not specifically helpful, I wanted to say it anyway because your words almost make it sound like you think something is wrong with the book. Or, that nobody really follows it and we all do undocumented stuff to build these systems. I don't.

Maybe spiky0011 or druuna will know what you need to do. But IMO, you still need to post much more specific details. Such as the exact specific thing that is not working, the terminal commands entered, output messages, etc. Anyway, good luck.

I dont see what i didnt post . Its telling me a program isnt installed when i try to install the next part of it . Even tho I can see that its there in the list .

Please post the exact command(s) you launch and the exact error message(s) you get. this will make it much easier for us to help you.

Is it really that difficult to understand what file not found means . And I just asked for a paste bin of what someone else did so i can compare and see where i failed at . Sorry but I just dont see how its difficult to understand

It is simple as that: File not found means that a file you specified on the commandline was not found by the system, either because it simply doesn't exist or because you made a typo in the filename.

Why do you think that people would create pastebins of the commands that are already written down in the book anyways?

I think the problem here is a different one. LFS is a great learning experience, but in order to benefit from it you must have knowledge of the basic things. That is the reason why the LFS book contains the page about Prerequisites. Without having that basic knowledge (and since you ask what file not found means I assume that you don't have it) the learning experience of LFS will be restricted of exercising copy&paste.

The reason why I asked you for the exact command is that we see what is going on on your side, so that we can point out what is wrong and especially why it is wrong.

And my comment about people not knowing what file not found means was sarcasm because people kept asking for a copy of the error . When I said what it is doing . As for the request for the paste bin info . Its quite simple following the book simply isnt working otherwise I wouldnt ask what someone else has done .

I am giving up here. You neither state which programs you try to install, nor do you give us the exact commands and error messages. You realize that there can be several reasons for a file not found error, like a missing library, a library in the wrong format, ... ? Seeing the error and the command would help us to help you.

Well I would of thought if i said its the part after binutils that was causing me problems you could tell it was gcc thats giving me problems . But its nice to know that when I ask for a simple paste . That I will be insulted And pretty much told that i know nothing about linux by a moderator . Instead of actually being helpful . I am so done with this thread .

I asked you for more information several times, but you refused to give it to us. I explained to you that we can not help you if you don't give that information to us.
That is for a simple reason: You didn't follow follow the book, as you have admitted already. So no one of us can know in which state your actual LFS progress really is.

Also, I still can't see why anyone that is following the book should make a pastebin for the information that is already written down in the book and how this pastebin should be relevant for someone not following the book.

If you find that insulting go the normal route and report the post you feel insulted by.

I already stated the problem i had was with bin utils and gcc that came after that and i stated the error that it gave . And I also stated that the only thing i did that was different then the book was that i used the x windows gui to put the files where they needed to be to install instead of moving them by the terminal . And I dont see how they would have any effect on the rest of the actions in the book . And basically calling someone an idiot that doesnt know how to use linux isnt being helpful . I told you the error it gave it said . If your unwilling or dont have the technical abilities to take that info and be useful then i cant really help you there . As for the paste bin i simply asked for it because copying out of the book was ineffective . Now if your done trying to be insulting ill go back to what i was doing .

Good, then I can go back to actually trying to help you. To do that we need more information. Please provide the exact command you have launched and the exact error message you get.

the prerequisites comment is insinuating that im an idiot that knows nothing about the os . And the error message was the thing about bin utils not being found or exiting . AS for an exact copy of that message . Yea considering that im over 3 hours away from the system that had that error . And its not set up for remote log in . That would be kind of difficult . And stating what i said should of been enough to show what the error meant . Im sure anyone that has used linux or any os for long would know what a file not found message looks like . No offense but they should . And as for the paste bin stuff is I was wanting to see what a person that actually completed the system put just incase there was some commands or something thats left out of the book . To see if there is any differences at all . And also to try and figure out if maybe the problem has to do with the hardware or os that i was trying to build the system with . And the error occured when i tried to do the install command out of the book for the next package that used the original package . You should be able to see it directly in the book
