i have just started building an lfs system, and am getting the bugs worked out. i have had several issues with missing something here or there and figuring it out, but am having this one issue that seems so basic i can't find any info on it. the book says to unpack the tar into the gcc source directory and rename the directories so the build procedures will use them automatically. i am having trouble finding this directory. i thought they were in the /bin foloder, but can't remember where they were. i haven't messed with linux much for a year or so, and this is my first build. it took me several hours of research to get the first crossbinutils built, and the time was 4 minutes. now, i don't want to mess up and just put them in the wrong place, everything is going relatively smoothly, at least it's working.

the book creates and moves you into the build directory
mkdir -v ../gcc-build
cd ../gcc-build
So the directory is sources/gcc-build

thanx so much. i hope to get this done tonight and start using it tomorrow. one more thing, if i may. why does it make me sudo when making a directory when i am supposed to be the owner of the directory? i am using the user 'lfs' like the book said, and did the chmod and chown to make lfs the owner, but when i try to create a directory or delete the build directory, i have to sudo it. not a big deal, it works, just trying to understand it better. which is one of the reasons i am making this os.
i am getting it, but i have to type in the whole path in order to create the directory without sudo, ex: mkdir -v $LFS/sources/gcc-build instead of mkdir -v ../gcc-build. and when i sudo created it without the full path, it said directory not found when i tried to go into it, but it showed up on the gui in the file list. confusing, but working.

Reason: had a question to add, then another thought

"Using the tar program, extract the package to be built. In Chapter 5, ensure you are the lfs user when extracting the package.
Change to the directory created when the package was extracted.
Follow the book's instructions for building the package.
Change back to the sources directory.
Delete the extracted source directory and any <package>-build directories that were created in the build process unless instructed otherwise."
All that should be done without sudo.
