GCC 2nd pass make error - xgcc cannot find -lc

Hi,
I have managed to do the first pass of gcc-4.3.2 as shown in the book (6.4) but when it comes to the make command for the second pass I get an error saying it cant find -lc. Here is the last bit of output:

/bin/bash ../../../gcc-4.3.2/libgcc/../

Does anyone know what causes this error or even how to fix it?

The problem was that I had started with binutils-2.19 and ld wasn't set up correctly. Im not sure how to modify the instructions in the book to change to 2.19 so I had to start again... again!
