Fluxbox gives 'Segmentation fault at address 0x0'

Hi

My previous attempt at installing an xfce4 desktop failed see:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...le-4175527877/

So I decided to start again on a new partition. I installed lfs from a

backup that I had which I assumed was not causing the problem. I then

re did BLFS in doing so I found that I had somehow failed to set

XORG_PREFIX="/usr" on my first attempt. So it looks like the cause of

the files going into the wrong directories then.

So this time when re doing BLFS I have spent more time on it and felt

certain that I had followed the book. Having completed Chapter 24. 'X

Window System Environment' I decided this time to install fluxbox instead of xfce4.

As an ordinary user startx appears to show the fluxbox window for a

fraction of a second then reverts to console, twm works fine.

Xorg.0.log gives:

The Synatics driver was the last thing called, so that is suspect. I would try with no mouse.

Presuming it is not that, Address 0x0 should never be called as memory by a program - the kernel prevents access there on most systems I would google the _many_ hits that a search like "fluxbox segmentation fault" produces. I would also do anything they told you on blfs-support, however inane, as I presume you posted there.

Thanks for this.

I have now removed the synaptics driver and I will continue to google but so far any hints have failed.

I am still struggling with this. I tried removing the 'Synatics driver' but was still unable to get the xfce desktop.

I have now built the xfce4 desktop and I am trying to use this and not fluxbox as before.

Below is my current Xorg.0.log which now has changed slightly:

You're into the video drivers there for sure.

There's a whole lot required by drivers as to versions for libdrm, the intel driver, Xorg server, libpixman, Mesa to keep these things working. Try an update of any/all of those. It seems like dud software - just locating it is the issue.

At this stage I would also install anotherwm - xfce or the like. It validates the support stuff and let's you narrow things down

You are using Intel driver with DRI3 enabled. DRI3 is really buggy at the moment and the latest xf86-video-intel release disables it by default. I'd try using the latest xf86-video-intel first before going any further, given that 2.99.x releases are considered "development" releases and can break from time to time, so it's always a good idea to use the latest one.

That's completely harmless.

Well so simple in the end.

Just used xf86-video-intel-2.99.917 instead of xf86-video-intel-2.99.916

Now I can get both xfce4 and fluxbox desktops.

Long time coming but I have learnt a fair bit along the way.

Thank you to Krejzi & business_kid for your input.
