Downloading Packages

Hi. I currently have LFS-5.1 set up, and would very much like to have a shot at LFS-6.0. The only problem is - I'm on dial-up , and downloading all those packages again would take FOREVER! I was wondering if someone who has already downloaded the LFS-6 packages would be kind enough to make me a CD. I would of course pay all costs incurred - postage, media etc. If anyone out there has some free time, and has the packages lying around on their hard drives, it would really help me out a lot. Better still if there's someone in the UK, as the postage would be less.

I read something in the book about a BootCD, which would have all the necessary packages already on it, but after searching around it seems it hasn't been made yet. Either that or I just can't find the place to order it.

Again, any help obtaining the packages would be MUCH appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

If you send me a URL where I can download the packages you need I can burn & ship them.

lloyd_smart 12-22-2004 03:09 PM

I don't think they can all be obtained from a single source, but the book has a page with links to all the packages (not directly to the files that need to be downloaded, but to places where you can get them such as freshmeat or sourceforge).

Here's a link to the list of packages:

THANK YOU for your help!

Just PM me any costs this has brought you, along with a way I can pay you.

Thanks again! :)

Can't PM you. It says I need to be a "contributing member" to use PM :(
So I suggest you Email me here ==> jeickal@yahoo.com

Ok. Email waiting for you.

Before you start d/l'ing and burning, you can get an ISO for the bootable CD (with all the packages) at this site. It's listed at the LFS site, but it's prety hard to find.

Enjoy!

Thanks anyway, but it doesn't have all the same package versions as in the final LFS-6.0 release. They're older. If only there was a CD like that of the current stable release, I'd go for it like a shot, but as it stands, I'll stick with jeickal's offer to download and burn for me. :)

I know that at some point there was a package of all the required packages. The guys in the irc channel pointed it out to me. That was for an older version, though i presume there is still a current one somewhere?
It is quite a good learning experience to to find the individual packages, but sometimes just a nuisance.
If the problem is bandwidth, maybe there should be a bittorrent of it?

lloyd_smart, I'm getting delievery failures answering your email. Is your "reply-to" field wrong or is there sth wrong with your domain name? Yahoo sent me this failure msg:
<QUOTE>
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at yahoo.com.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following
addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

<your email here>:
Sorry, I couldn't find any host by that name. (#4.1.2)
I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too
long.
<END_OF_QUOTE>

I have questions for you about the packages you need so try to figure this out or send me another email address.

Basically there are alot of versions for the list of packages you sent me. To make things simpler, I'm FTPing the whole thing for each package so you can pick which one you want. However few packages are way to big to do this (GCC for instance...) For those you need to be more specific about the version you need (the most recent stable one?). For the rest like I said, it's easier for me to get the whole thing. One problem doing this though is that it won't fit on one CD, If you have a DVD drive then there no problem.

levicc00123 12-29-2004 09:25 AM

there's one big bzipped tar file that has all packages on it at ftp://ftp.linuxfromscratch.org/pub/lfs/lfs-packages

lloyd_smart 12-29-2004 11:20 AM

I just took a look at that ftp server, and it looks good. In the directory mentioned by levicc00123, there's a file called lfs-packages-6.0.tar.bz2 which should have everything I need. Alternatively, you can continue with the FTPing you've already done if you don't feel like starting over again. I do have a DVD drive, so it's ok. The versions I need are listed on the page I sent you a link to in the LFS book, in brackets after the package name. e.g. "E2fsprogs (1.35) - 3,003 KB:", then the link on the next line.

I really appreciate you taking the trouble to do this, by the way. Thanks!

I got the whole things burned on a DVD.
So, should I ship it the following address?
lloyd_smart
Wales, UK

OK just kidding there ;) Let me know your name&address and you'll get it within few days.

Oh and by the way, Happy new years :)

lloyd_smart 01-05-2005 10:49 AM

Ok, emailed you my address. Happy new year to you too!
