Installing and configuring X and a GUI desktop environment is covered in book 2: Beyond Linux From Scratch.

I highly recommend reading this introduction if you haven't already done so: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/

Hi
Lfs dosn't have a gui as pointed out by snowpine, The second book is where that is built.

At the end of building LFS you will have a basic OS which uses a terminal, Then you progress on to BLFS and you can build what you want from there.

Hi

This is not an OS like you think, LFS is a system that you build from scratch If you dont have the ability to build software from source then this is not for you,
Lfs is built from nothing building everything from scratch all from command line.
Learning difficulty hard if you dont know your way around a linux system, sorry.

If you do want to go ahead be prepared for a lot of work, there are ppl on this forum that will help,

Hope this helps.

So i think that i should go along with the book's guide lines. I know about linux behaviour and have quite a good idea about it. I clearly or bit near to it, understand the difference between linux and other OS. So can you please tell me how much time will it take to come up with some result after i finish the 1st book LFS? I have a clear idea about programming, so what else will i need to get started with building LFS. And what actually comes with the ISO. It is clear that it will have the Linux kernel, and what else will it contain? Thanks for the support.

Hi

At a guess it will take about 200hrs to build estimated, It dose not come as an iso you have to build everything from source.
Have you read the book yet it will give you some sort of idea. Read through here

Thanks, you are really helpful and informative. But i got a url - http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/lfs-livecd...6-6.3-pre1.iso This link is working and leads to the live desktop version of lfs. But what actually is it? B'coz as you said, its not any iso, you have to build it from scratch. Please check and tell me. And you didn't answer about what knowledge will i need to start with LFS. Thank you!

Hi

Ok can you give the link that lead you to that as it is just a download,
The knowledge you will need is to be able to compile software from source, and figure out errors you recieve, the book gives u all the commands but you must follow it as it is the 1st build, You will make mistakes you will start from the begining again.
The live cd is old now it is still usable but the software on it is out of date and dosn't match the book.
The live cd can be used to setup the enviroment to build the system or you can use a host system "Ubuntu I used that as the host, feel free to ask Questions some one will help you.

This project requires reading, as others have said, you will have to read the LFS book, all the information you need is in there. This is a self learning experience, not something someone can tell you how to do.
